The goal of the Audubon Mural Project is to create murals of over 300 North American birds, mainly in the northern Manhattan neighborhoods of Hamilton and Washington Heights where John James Audubon spent the last 10 years of his life.

We walk mostly along Broadway between West 148th and 164th Streets, seeing about 30 murals. Because the artists have license to represent the birds in any way that they choose, there is great variation in the styles of painting. And the murals range from lovely panels that fill a window frame to spectacular works covering the entire side of a building. All of the birds painted have been identified as being threatened by climate change.

We also visit John James Audubon’s impressive gravesite in the Trinity Church Cemetery.
