About John Tauranac
John Tauranac writes on New York City’s social- and architectural history, he has taught the subject for over thirty years at NYU’s School of Professional Studies, he gives tours and lectures on the city, and he designs maps. His books include Manhattan’s Little Secrets; The Empire State Building: The Making of a Landmark; the three editions of New York From the Air, with the great aerial photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand, and; Elegant New York. He was designated a Centennial Historian by the Office of the Mayor for his work in history, and NYU’s School of Professional Studies presented him with an Award for Teaching Excellence.
Tauranac’s first published maps were New York Magazine’s “Undercover Maps” of Midtown and Lower Manhattan, which showed passageways to take through and under buildings to stay warm in the cold and dry in the wet. He chaired the MTA subway map committee for the bulk of its existence in the late 1970s, and was was the creative director of the 1979 MTA subway map, the map that was awarded a commendation for design excellence by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Endowment for the Arts. His current crop of maps includes Manhattan Block By Block: A Street Atlas, Manhattan: 3 Maps in 1, etc.
