NYC Remembers: Staten Island's September 11th Postcards Memorial
Join Alex Zablocki, co-founder of Friends of Postcards, 9/11 Memorial and Museum Visionary Network member and local St. George, Staten Island resident, for a tour of Staten Island's September 11th Postcards Memorial and discussion of unity and community resilience in the aftermath of September 11, 2001. Postcards is a short walk from the Staten Island Ferry Terminal along the North Shore Waterfront Esplanade, a stunning and somber memorial to the 275 Staten Islanders lost on September 11, 2001.
Dedicated on the third anniversary of the attack in 2004, the memorial was created by Architect Masayuki Sono, who won a design competition held in early 2003, and it features two fiberglass structures resembling postcards, perhaps being sent to lost loved ones. The memorial honors each victim with a profile silhouette on a granite plaque listing their name, birth date, and place of work at the time of the attack. Postcards includes the Staten Island September 11 First Responders Memorial. Dedicated in 2017, the First Responders Memorial, featuring the names of Staten Islanders who have died as a result of 9/11-related illnesses, was unveiled.
The Friends of Postcards is a group of concerned citizens that have lost loved ones in 9/11 and due to 9/11 related illness, as well as local residents and volunteers dedicated to improving the memorial in St. George, Staten Island.
