It's right there under your feet, you probably ride it every day, but how much do you really know about New York City's subway system? It's time to explore one of the oldest and largest public transit systems in the world.

Join me as we explore the history of the original New York City subway line — opened in 1904 with 9.1 miles of route and serving 28 stations, the City of New York's subway system has since grown to encompass 472 stations and over 245 miles of tracks, serving, pre-pandemic, nearly 6 million riders per day.

Led by transit expert and licensed tour guide Gary Dennis, our subterranean exploration from Brooklyn Bridge — City Hall station to Times Square Station will include:

    • An overview of New York public transportation back in the 1800s, and why The Great Blizzard of 1888 was the catalyst for a subway system
    • The history and inside story of the creation of the original 1904 subway line, and how it grew into the most extensive transportation system in the world
    • A closer look at the art, architecture, and secrets hiding in plain sight of stations including Brooklyn Bridge - City Hall, Astor Place, and Times Square
    • A glimpse of Old City Hall Station from the 6 train, the crown jewel of the subway system, which closed in 1945

With GANYC guide Leigh Hallingby, you will see about 2 dozen murals and mosaics, which tell us so much about the history, culture, and politics of the residents of this under-appreciated NYC neighborhood.

Many of the artworks celebrate the Latin culture of the neighborhood. Some of the art is dedicated to accomplished citizens of Spanish Harlem, such as the writers Julia de Burgos and Nicholasa Mohr. Others honor world-famous people such as Celia Cruz and Che Guevara.

The art also brings into the streets the gorgeous scenery of the tropical islands which so many members of this community left behind.

We walk less than one mile between E. 111th and E. 103rd Streets and between Lexington and Third Avenues.

Over the past century, Grand Central Terminal has captivated people from around the world with its architectural beauty, unique brick and mortar eateries, and endless transit possibilities. It’s also full of secrets — from being the target of a failed Nazi sabotage mission during WWII to containing hidden areas that keep it and its train traffic running each day. It's time to explore one of the most perfect train terminals in the world like never before.

as we venture through Grand Central Terminal — one of the most beautiful and famous train terminals on Planet Earth — along with the new Grand Central Madison LIRR station located 140 feet underground.

Led by NYC Tour Guide Gary Dennis, our unique ground-level and subterranean experience through this urban wonder of the world will include:

    • The history of New York Central, the company that built Grand Central Terminal as well as the two preceding incarnations of the terminal built at the same location (third time's a charm!)
    • The incredible story of how Grand Central Terminal escaped the wrecking ball, and what the Landmarks Preservation Commission, Former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and the United States Supreme Court had to do with it
    • Mysteries of the terminal revealed including why there's a hole in the ceiling, how artists messed-up one of its most defining artworks, and how to find its hidden cocktail lounge
    • A trip 15 stories down to the 700,000 square foot Grand Central Madison to visit incredible new works of art — opened in 2023, this LIRR station was the final piece of East Side Access, a decades-long infrastructure project that finally brought Long Island Rail Road trains to Grand Central Terminal
    • Rare photos from secret areas throughout the terminal, including M42, the  catwalks, and more

It is impossible to tell the story of New York without telling the story of its media, in particular its newspapers. From the city’s beginnings to modern day, New Yorkers have developed an insatiable thirst for news and information, and the newspaper industry rose to quench that thirst with news coverage that continued to evolve with the city, not just chronicling the Big Apple, but reflecting it as it changed politically, demographically, socially and economically.

From 1725 to the period after World War I, downtown served as home to hundreds of different newspapers (in English and other languages) that not only covered the city, the country and the world, but shaped it as well. Along the way, the newspapers and the people who wrote for, edited and published them became synonymous with the city, achieving fame and fortune along the way.

Join GANYC President Michael Morgenthal, a former journalist, on this fascinating look at the newspapers both past and present that shaped the city. Along the way we will get to know only-in-New York characters like Alexander Hamilton , Dorothy Schiff, Joseph Pulitzer, William Cullen Bryant, Horace Greeley, Nelly Bly, James Gordon Bennett Sr and Jr, and Adolph Ochs. We’ll dive into the stories behind the most famous NYC articles in city history , including “Headless Body in Topless Bar,” “Ford to City: Drop Dead!” and “Yes Virginia There is a Santa Claus!”
